What Does The Term "Professional" Mean To You?

  1. It's almost easier to define what the term "professional" ISN'T. There are so many people who claim to be "professionals" who hang their shingle with NO background, training or experience. They talk a good game and fool a lot of people for a very long time. Often the horse is the victim, injured or "brain fried" from the experience. I've seen trainers who advise students to buy horses that are NOT right for the student (but the trainer sees him/herself showing the horse FOR the student, and those dreams are surrounded by dollar signs). I've seen trainers sell horses with hefty commissions added on. I've seen trainers bill EVERYONE in their barn for showing even though not everyone's horse WENT to the show. Etc. And there is no recourse for that trainer. People leave the barn all the time but don't publicize the poor ethics and questionable businesses practices because a) they don't want to burn their bridges; or b) they learned the hard way and want others to learn the same way, too.

Yeah, it's easier to describe what is NOT professional ;o)
